![]() ![]() Quite the opposite: most of the time, movie monsters exist as stand-ins for very real issues, whether it’s the climate crisis, the threat of nuclear annihilation or, in the case of Arnie’s aforementioned arch nemesis, a deep-seated fear of human anatomy. But that’s not to say cinematic beasts can’t tell us something about the world we actually live in. ![]() Instead, they live their monstrousness out loud, leveling skyscrapers, terrorising small-town teenagers or hunting Arnold Schwarzenegger in the jungles of Central America. Only, the monsters of celluloid don’t often bother disguising themselves as powerful producers or casting agents.
